La joya expandida (Expanded Jewellery): new book by Enric Majoral

The new book ‘La Joya expandida’ (Expanded Jewellery) contains a selection of meaningful pieces by Enric Majoral where he reflects on the creative, conceptual and technological evolution of his work.

The intertwined paths of design, craftsmanship and art converge in the creative work of Enric Majoral. Creative work that materialises in the new book ‘La joya expandida’, which compiles a selection of Majoral‘s meaningful pieces and large-format works. The new publication provides a tour of over 40 years of creative work by Enric Majoral, showing different creative perspectives and reflecting on the conceptual, technological and artistic evolution of contemporary jewellery.

The contributions of Enric Majoral to craft jewellery and the development of contemporary Mediterranean jewellery have enabled him to develop a personal language recognisable for its singularity and modernity, which has served as a source of inspiration in the younger generations of the jewellery world.

In this sense, ‘La joya expandida’ endeavours to unite the contributions of craft, design and creation in Majoral’s contemporary jewellery. The book comprises meaningful pieces that show the creative complexity of the jeweller. Pieces accompanied by personal and professional reflections of the author.

The items of jewellery expanded: an infinite search around the volume and space of the jewellery

Since his youth, Enric Majoral has undertaken an insatiable search around the volume and space of jewellery. From this desire to expand the items of jewellery to the limit of their format come the massive pieces designed by Enric Majoral, which is expressed in the author’s new book. In this way the Catalan jeweller aims to bring life to the designs that enable us to establish a dynamic dialogue between the body, jewellery and space.

This conceptual effort by Enric Majoral resulted in the ADLIB catwalk in Ibiza in 2019, where a series of experimental and large pieces were shown. The work has given life to pieces of jewellery-sculpture, such as the work titled “The Water Carrier, 2019-2020”, a large-scale piece created to emphasise its special relationships within an architectural space. The work is made up of hundreds of pieces of painted silver.

The importance of the relationship with the materials in the pieces by Majoral

The artistic task of Enric Majoral has always been characterised for giving free reign to creativity, free of limitations or complexes. And in this artistic and conceptual development, a feature is the relationship that the jeweller has with the materials in the artistic work. A relationship characterised by applying different strategies to provide creative and quite unconventional forms. The desire now becomes letting each material, with its unique characteristics, speak for itself and take on its natural forms. This attitude of treating each material according to its characteristics has crystallised into a rich and extensive repertoire, full of retouches that make each piece unique.

But the work of Enric Majoral cannot be conceived without the influence of the natural and cultural environment. Formentera, his source of inspiration, is always present in the artistic creation of Majoral. An artistic creation in which he has always endeavoured to evolve contemporary and functional jewellery and introduce the influence of art, design and culture in his creations. The new book by Enric Majoral, ‘La Joya expandida’, has the clear aim of converging design, craftsmanship and art in jewellery. A work to discover the possibilities of jewellery when it expands.
