Craft jewellery, the art of communication through a jewel

It is often the case that when we buy craft jewellery, we end up deciding on the purchase for the design and what the jewel is capable of communicating. But what do we mean when we talk of craft jewellery? The concept of craft jewellery refers to the production process of the item of jewellery itself. In craft jewellery the whole creative process of the piece is done manually by a craftsperson and no way industrialised. Therefore, the concept of craft jewellery covers the maximum expression of the craftsperson’s trade, creativity and art, which result in a piece of jewellery capable of communicating beyond just the design.

At Majoral we understand craft jewellery as a creative and vital experience that enables us to make the items of jewellery a representation of our personality and values. For this reason, the elaboration of a craft item of jewellery enables us to communicate values and the essence of the setting that surrounds it. In the case of Majoral, our Mediterranean essence and our values of solidarity and sustainability are present in our collections.

The creative process of an item of jewellery

Craft jewellery requires large helping doses of creativity to start any creative process. The task of the craftsperson begins with the mental conception or the design of the piece and the precious metals it will require. From here, the whole elaboration process will be crafted in nature, from the studio, to embody the concept and turn it into jewellery. Thus craft production works directly with the precious metals and stones. They also use specific moulds to smelt the precious metal and, from here, give form through manual techniques of pressure and modelling. The aim in making any craft item of jewellery goes from extracting the beauty in the form and creating a unique object capable of transmitting that which an industrialised process is incapable of achieving.

As in any process of craft production, the role of the artist and their inspiration is fundamental to design and embodies the essence of what they wish to communicate in the item of jewellery. In the case of Majoral, the works of Enric Majoral and Roc Majoral cannot be understood without the island of Formentera as a source of inspiration.

Design and functionality: Majoral’s commitment to craft jewellery

Craft jewellery endeavours to offer an experience that goes beyond the product in itself. In the case of Majoral, the commitment is to functional craft jewellery, which enables different expressions to be adopted according to the person who wears it. At Majoral we understand craft jewellery as an opportunity to help people show their personality and transmit their values. This is why we believe in the very process of elaboration of an item of jewellery to be done respecting the people, setting and environment in the whole process of the traceability of the product.

Our artistic and professional career has resulted in the awarding of the National Crafts Prize of the Ministry of Industry in 2007 (Periodico de Ibiza). Enric Majoral has also received the Mestre Artesà (Master Craftsperson) Prize (web Gencat.cat).

And last year we received the Ramon Llull Prize of the Govern de les Illes Balears (Balearic Government) for the firm’s professional trajectory. Recognitions that encourage us to continue with our commitment to craft, fair and responsible jewellery.
