What does the Fairmined certification mean in Jewellery?
The Fairmined certification in jewellery ensures that the precious metals have been extracted fairly, responsibly and sustainably
Having precious metals extracted responsibly, fairly and respecting the environment is essential to limit the negative impact of the jewellery industry in our world. The Fairmined certification enables us to ensure that the item of jewellery has been made with fairly and responsibly mined precious metals.
But what is it that Fairmined certifies exactly? The Fairmined certification is a seal that certifies that the gold in the item in question has been obtained by responsible mining organisations, mining organisations that comply with the Fairmined standards.
The Fairmined certification is a seal issued by the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM), which works to produce stimuli between the mining organisations and provide a responsible context, from the economic, technological, social and environmental spheres. Therefore, ethical jewellery with Fairmined certification ensures us that it is made with fairly and responsibly mined precious metals.
Nevertheless, the determination of the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) goes beyond that and it works “to transform artisanal mining into a formalised, organised and profitable activity” that also respects the social and labour rights of people and cares for the environment.
Majoral, official distributor of Fairmined since 2013
At Majoral we think that more fairly and responsibly mined the jewels and metals, the more precious they are. This is why in 2013 we became the official distributor of Fairmined metals. Today, our gold jewellery collections are made with recycled RJC metal or gold with the Fairmined certification.
In this way we are assured that the metal that Majoral uses has either been extracted from small-scale artisanal mines, totally controlled and where the wellbeing of people and the environment is respected, or recycled RJC gold.
From our point of view using fairly and responsibly mined precious metals is a moral duty to ensure that Majoral’s economic activity plays its part in improving our social and environmental setting.
What does Fairmined certify exactly?
For a mine to obtain the Fairmined certification the Alliance for Responsible Mining establishes a set of requisites. Firstly, it must fit the category of small-scale artisanal mining. Additionally, the certification ensures that no mine operates in environmentally sensitive areas or ecosystems. Moreover, it ensures that no mine supports or finances illegal or armed organisations, whether directly or indirectly.
All these requisites are audited by the ARM, which establishes direct and continuous contact with the mining organisations to guarantee their proposal: to have precious metals extracted fairly, sustainably and responsibly.
